Things to know About the Engenni Tribe in Nigeria

Published on: • Categories: Know-Nigeria

The Engenni (also called Ẹgẹnẹ) people are an ethnic group primarily located in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, known for their historical significance as some of the earliest settlers in the region.

Location and Origin

  • Location: The Engenni people are predominantly found in the Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria. Some communities also exist in neighboring Bayelsa State. Their settlements are mostly along the Orashi River and its tributaries, like the Taylor Creek.
  • Origin and History: Historical accounts suggest the Engenni migrated from the ancient Benin Empire approximately 900 to 1,000 years ago, first settling in an Isoko community before founding their own settlements in the Niger Delta. This migration narrative connects them historically with other Edoid and Ijaw groups in the region.

Language and Identity

  • Language: The language spoken by the people is Engenni (Ẹgẹnẹ), which is classified as an Edoid language within the Niger-Congo language family. The language has several major dialects, including Enuedua (Inedua), Ogua, and Ejiro.
  • Classification: Linguistically, they are grouped as Edoid, though their proximity and historical ties lead some to consider them an Ijaw subgroup or an Ijaw-Edoid people, as they live in close association with Ijaw communities.

Social Structure and Governance

The Engenni society is organized around a traditional administrative structure, which is patrimonial (father-led). The political hierarchy is structured as follows:

  1. Ibe Egene: The entire Engenni Kingdom or ethnic nationality.
  2. Okilom-Ibe (Paramount Ruler): The government-recognized traditional ruler of the entire kingdom.
  3. Opiri (Clan Council): The council for the major clans (Ogua, Enuedua/Joinkrama, Ejiro-Ede, etc.), each headed by an Okilom-Opiri (Group-head).
  4. Ogbo Akyeyi/Obi Ogbo Akiye (Village Council/Assembly): The council at the community level.
  5. Ovumu/Omu (House Council): The family unit level, headed by the Okilom-Omu (Family head).

Economy and Livelihood

The traditional economy of the Engenni people is primarily centered on the resources provided by their riverine and forest environment:

  • Primary Occupations: Their main traditional activities are fishing and farming (growing crops like yam, plantain, and cassava), alongside hunting.
  • Crafts and Trade: They are also skilled in crafts such as canoe and paddle making, blacksmithing, and basket making. Their trade items historically included agricultural products, timber, canoes, and fishing gear.
  • Natural Resources: The Engenni kingdom sits on land rich in crude oil and natural gas. Oil exploration in the area has been ongoing since the mid-1950s, with the Adebawa oil wells in Joinkrama being one of the earliest commercial finds in Nigeria.

Culture and Modern Influence

  • Traditional Religion: Before the arrival of Christianity, the Engenni people practiced traditional African religion, with beliefs centered on a supreme being, God (Oniso), and ancestral spirits.
  • Christianity and Education: The first Christian missionaries (American Baptist) arrived around the late 1800s/early 1900s, leading to the rapid spread of Christianity, which is now the dominant religion. The missionaries also established the first churches and primary schools, which led to a strong inclination toward Western education. The Engenni are known for having a high percentage of educated citizens in Rivers State.
  • Cultural Preservation: Many elements of their rich traditional culture, such as festivals, masquerade displays, and rites of passage, have largely been superseded by modern life and Christianity. However, some cultural aspects, like the traditional drumming and dancing styles, have been integrated into contemporary church worship.
  • Marriage: Traditional marriage (polygyny was a common practice) involves an elaborate process, using indigenous communication channels (like word-of-mouth and symbolic displays) for mate selection, negotiation, and contract finalization.
